Soul II Soul are a British musical collective formed in London in 1988. They are best known for their 1989 UK chart-topper and US top five hit "Back to Life", and "Keep On Movin'" which reached number five in the UK and number 11 in the US.

“We’re from the days when a number 14 bus and a supermarket trolley got us around.” Jazzie B remembers the lengths he and a school friend used to go to play dances with their first sound system when they were just 13 years old. It sums up the determination, resourcefulness and a love for music, that got Soul II Soul where it is today.

Heather Small

Heather Small, a lead vocalist born and raised in London, England, was first a member of Hot House, an R&B trio that released a pair of albums during the late '80s. Shortly after Hot House's breakup, she joined the Manchester-based and further house-oriented M People.M People’s four albums released throughout the '90s reportedly sold over ten million copies worldwide. Following on Small released her first solo album, Proud, in 2000. It was a significant retreat from the dancefloor, featuring a mixture of R&B and rock - the kind of material that wouldn't have been out of place on albums by Seal, Sade, or Des'ree. After spending several years away from music to raise a child, she returned in 2006 with Close to a Miracle.

Fatback Band

The Fatback Band made many great singles throughout the '70s and early '80s, ranging from humorous novelty tunes to energetic dance vehicles and even occasional political/message tracks. They shortened their name to Fatback in 1977, and landed their first Top Ten R&B hit with "I Like Girls" in 1978. Their 1979 single "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" is widely considered the first rap single in many circles. But their biggest year was 1980. They scored two Top Ten R&B hits with "Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)" and "Backstrokin'," their finest tune. Fatback kept going through the mid-'80s, landing one more Top 20 hit with "Take It Any Way You Can Want It" in 1981.

Janet Kay

anet Kay Bogle, 17 January 1958, London, England. Kay attended Brondesbury High School, Wembley, and later took up secretarial studies, skills to which she has returned at various junctures in her recording career. Her first recordings came under the aegis of Alton Ellis in 1977. This had been brought about by a chance meeting with members of Aswad that summer, who recommended her to the reggae stalwart. The first result of the collaboration, ‘Loving You’, topped the reggae charts. In many ways she was the prototype lovers rock singer, with her spirited vocals floating over some of the genre’s most inspired basslines. ‘That’s What Friends Are For’ and ‘I Do Love You’ followed. However, her breakthrough came with ‘Silly Games’, produced by Dennis Bovell for the Arawak label. It became a huge crossover hit, reaching number 2 in 1979. Kay has returned intermittently to recording, predominantly in the lovers rock style, and has also acted extensively as part of the Black Theatre Co-operative, appearing in several straight acting roles on television. Her work has never lost its popularity with the reggae audience, despite her low profile for much of the 80s and 90s, and she has the talent and personality to be successful on her own terms.

Kenny Thomas

class="pinkperformtext bloc-link" href="#" data-page="1" data-custom-classes="pinkperformtext">Performing on Saturday 3rd September 2022
Kenny Thomas was one of the most popular UK soul dance vocalists of the early 1990s. His biggest UK hit came in 1991 with ‘Thinking About Your Love’ (number 4), while his debut album sold more than 600, 000 copies in the UK alone. Other hit singles spawned by that debut included ‘Outstanding’, ‘The Best Of You’ and ‘Tender Love’, and also resulted in a Brit Award nomination for Best British Male Vocalist and Best British Newcomer. The warm, relaxed dance grooves of that debut were replicated on a second album that continued Thomas’ massive commercial success. Guest musicians this time round included the Young Disciples, Nu Colours and the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra. This time some of the bonhomie of the original set was more restrained, with a slightly more mature lyrical vision reflecting more real-life experiences.

The Dualers!

British ska band the Dualers started out as buskers. Gradually building a huge fan base, they self-released multiple albums, played to massive crowds, and scored two U.K. Top 30 hit singles, all without any label backing.
in 1999. Starting out as a duo before expanding to a regularly rotating nine-piece lineup, they performed on the streets for several years and toured heavily, eventually building enough of a fan base that their debut single, "Kiss on the Lips," released in 2004, went to number 21 on the U.K. chart. A second single, "Truly Madly Deeply," was released the following year and went to number 23; it was later used on the soundtrack of the romantic adventure film Fool's Gold, starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. The Dualers self-released more than 15 albums, toured the U.K. in support of the Blockheads and Madness, and played a record-breaking sold-out 11-night residency at London's IndigO2. Si Cranstoun left the band in 2010 to focus on a solo career, eventually signing a million-pound record deal with Warner Bros. while Tyber continued with the Dualers as its sole frontman. The band's 2019 album, Palm Trees and 80 Degrees, went to number 11 on the U.K. album charts.
